MistyMountain

Girl Scout Troop 4715 will be going on a camping trip to Northwest Georgia Council Camp Misty Mountain near Calhoun, GA, on March 3-5, 2000. The troop will stay in the fishing village unit called Blue Gill Bay, and we plan to go on a trail ride and to climb the Challenge Tower at the camp. We also plan to learn how to use backpacking stoves, work on our Silver Award, take a nature hike, and possibly have a dance party. Parents need to provide information about their daughter's experience with horses. This is especially important for parents of girls who have not ridden with this troop before. Both the trail ride and the challenge tower activities will be on Sunday. A separate permission form is required for participation in the trail ride.

Girls should bring their Silver Award notebooks, Cadette Handbooks, and Interest Project Books. Each girl will need fast food money for Friday dinner.  We will probably stop at the Subway in Calhoun. A few CD's in case we decide on a dance party will also be okay. We are also asking that each person who attends contribute $20 toward the cost of the trip.

We are looking for one or two more backpacking stoves, but the Girl Scout regulations accept only the kinds that do not use liquid fuel. The kinds that use propane are fine. If you can loan one, please let one of the leaders know.

In addition to the regular things to bring to camp (see our website's packing list), girls will need long pants and a shoe with a half-inch straight heel for riding. Helmets will be provided, but a warm jacket and gloves are advisable. Shoes and socks are requested for all outdoor activities, and an extra pair of comfortable shoes or sneakers is great for hiking. We will need the backpacking type of mess kit, which many girls have. There are a number of pieces of this kind of mess kit in our kitchen box, but girls who would like to use them are encouraged to come over to the Callaway's and pick them out by Wednesday before we leave for camp.

We will leave Friday immediately after school from Chamblee Middle School, Peachtree Middle School, and Henderson Middle School. The carpool drivers will specify the exact time and place of departure and will contact each girl. All camping gear should be delivered to the carpool driver the night before unless other arrangements are made. The Henderson & Shamrock girls will be riding with either Mrs. Unger or Mrs. Gargiullo. Mrs. Lott is willing to collect any school backpacks and instruments from the Henderson Middle girls at the departure time so they can be collected upon the return Sunday. Mrs. Kennedy will do the same for the Chamblee/Peachtree girls and will drive them up to camp. We will plan to be back at St. Bede's around 6 PM on Sunday due to our mid-afternoon trail ride (scheduled for 2-4PM, we think). After arriving at St. Bede's and being picked up by her family, each girl should proceed to the Lott's house to pick up their schoolbooks, instruments, and most importantly, her Girl Scout cookies!  Parents are also welcome to pick up the cookies anytime after 12:30 PM Sunday afternoon before the girls return from camp.

Our contact parent during the weekend will be Janet Kennedy, and she will notify parents if there is a change in schedule. Adults who will be camping with the troop on this trip are Pat Callaway, Audrey Gargiullo, and Beth Unger.

Two signed permission slips are needed for this trip - one for the trip itself  and one for the horseback riding.  The horseback riding instructor will not allow girls to participate in equestrian activities without a signed horseback riding permission slip !
