The elusive Purbach Cross on the moon, taken from my driveway on 3/16/2016 with an old iPhone at the eyepiece of a small telescope. What are we looking at? Look for a bright "X" glowing in the darkness as sunrise on the moon begins to illuminate the crater rims. In this photo, the white "X" is located about halfway up the right edge of the illuminated moonscape, lying in the shadows. This 1st quarter phenomenon only lasts a short time - the "X" disappears within an hour or two as sunlight engulfs the area. |
