CONCHARTY FOREVER
We had a great time. There were a few difficulties, bumps, and one bloody toe, but on the whole it was a great time. Special thanks to Chandler, Rossie, and their mom for shopping and packing all our food. We finished three of the Skill Builders for our Paperworks Interest Patch Project with origami, decoupage, and paper cutting, and we'll finish painting our paper maché plant critters (#4 Skill Builder) ASAP. Many thanks to Mrs. Lott who researched wonderful library books, copied patterns for use, and even made us a bibliography for further papercraft good times.
To complete the Interest Patch we'll need to teach a paper craft to a younger troop (Service), visit a wallpaper store (Careers), and visit the paper museum at Georgia Tech (Technology). Mrs. Unger is working out the details of our Tech trip. We don't want to overwhelm one Brownie or Junior troop, so we'll probably split up into smaller groups to teach, and Pat has contacted one Brownie troop so far, who say they will be delighted to have the big girls come.
NEXT MEETING: SEPTEMBER 24 AT ST. BEDE'S 7-10 PM
Parent Meeting 7-7:30 p.m.
We plan to work on and complete most of the Dreams to Reality patch at this meeting. Katie, Christina Gargiullo, and Evelyn have already finished the patch, but they will spend some time updating their Silver Award Notebooks and some time doing some of the fun things. Every girl should bring her Silver Award Notebook because we will want to take notes on what we are doing while we are doing it. Please try not to miss this meeting. We will not be going back through these activities later, so if you miss it will be up to you to complete the Dreams to Reality patch on your own.
Girls who attended the GPTV day in August have completed one of their activities for this patch. As Pat remembers it those girls were Anne, Christina G., Stephanie, Chandler, Rossie, Diana, Elizabeth, Evelyn, and Nicole. Please let Mrs. Weirich know if we've left you off this list. The other tour that we will take will be of the UPS Processing Center on Pleasantdale Road. We will be able to do this tour in December when the Center is at it's busiest. The tour is not scheduled yet, but we're trying for December 3 or 17. Please let Pat know about conflicts you may have on those dates.
We'll work on the calendar at the Parent Meeting. Parents, please look at the Planning Calendar the girls worked on during the Concharty trip. We hope all the girls' copies managed to get home, but the planning calendar is also available here on our website if you need it. Mrs. Lott still needs updated health forms for Afua and Jenny, and updated driver's information from Mrs. Manley-Spain and Mrs. Tuggle. If we can take care of these details at the Parent Meeting, it will be a help. Thanks!
PROGRAM AIDE WEEKENDS
Being a Program Aide means that your daughter has taken ten hours of special training to help her be effective in working with other girls, especially younger girls. On the Program Aide weekends there are, in addition, specialized training in different areas. We missed the deadline for the Outdoor Skills training, which was the one most of the girls wanted, but maybe we can get it later. There are weekends coming up with Program Aide training and special training in the National Science Partnership (November 12-14), Songs and Games (January 21-23), Creative Crafts (February 4-6) and Day Camp Training (March 4-6). The weekends cost $25 per girl or adult attendee. Later on if we decide to take just the specialized part it will only cost $10 since we won't stay for a whole weekend.
The girls are very interested in taking the training and spending a weekend together. Since we can't get to the Outdoor Skills, your trusty Cadette advisors think that our best bet is to go as a troop to the second-most-wanted Creative Crafts weekend in February and then move our planned President's Day camping trip to the first weekend in March, which is also a three-day weekend. This will get us four camping weekends, which will make Aisha & Christina happy.
THE OPERA
Pat and the moms concerned will need to talk about the girls' participation in the Brenau production of The Bartered Bride by Smetana. After Pat carefully explained the commitment required, the girls were thoughtful before deciding if they wanted to participate. The girls who think they would like to do so are Afua, Rossie, Jenny, Chris M., Christina G., Evelyn, Stephanie, Anne, Chandler, and Diana. Here's what will need to happen:
This is definitely asking a lot of the girls and their families. If the opera were better funded, we could make it easier, but the funds that there are can only be spent on things in which the students are directly participating. It will be great for all the girls to participate whose families feel that the cost is worthwhile. Girls will not have to be in the opera to work on the interest patch!
