Iraqi Children Project

Through a project begun by a soldier after a tour of duty in Iraq, a colleague of Mrs. Callaway's has learned about a young man who's serving in northern Iraq. He says that when he's on patrol, he tries to give these desperately poor children, many of them Kurds, paper and pencils. She is collecting small items--small writing pads, small boxes of crayons, markers, or pencils--and when her box is filled she will send it to Sgt. Conkright. If you would like to bring items to our next meeting, we can contribute to this project to help the Iraqi children.

Our Own Very Special "Tea for Moms" This is our service project for the Creative Cooking IPP.  Each girl should have invited her own mom by now.  The plan is to do some of the cooking at our meeting Friday, March 11.  Brittany and Tabby have volunteered to come at 1:30 on Saturday afternoon to make the cake.  Anyone who wants to do flowers should also come about that time.  All other girls are expected no later than 3:00 to set the tables, and so forth.  We may be having as many as 20 for this party, so we have to be ready.  Maria and Stephanie have volunteered to provide music, and since Diana and Elizabeth were at honor band instead of Timber Ridge, we volunteered them to be musicians, too.  Pat has two pianos and one music stand.  Please bring any other musical gear you need.

We will be using Mrs. Gargiullo’s treasure trove of tea party cook books, especially Tea Time Treats* and the Celestial Seasonings Tea Party Book**.  Here’s the menu we are planning:

Orange Scones with Whipped Cream and Marmalade (page 10*)

Three Kinds of Tea Sandwiches (egg salad, chicken salad, and cucumber)

Lemon Poppy Seed Mini Muffins*

Peppermint Chocolate Cake (page 111**)

Fresh Strawberries with Sour Cream and Brown Sugar

Orange Zinger Herbal Tea

Constant Comment Tea

Earl Grey Tea

Green Tea

Mrs. Gargiullo has volunteered some of her teapots.  Pat will supply dishes and linens, including two tea cozies, but if anyone can bring two more tea cozies, that will be a help.  At the Friday meeting we will have to create a schedule of who will be “pouring out” or being the serving wenches at various times.

Dress has been declared to be whatever each girl chooses as appropriate tea party attire.  We expect diversity.

Savannah Trip May 24-27, 2005

At our camping trip in February we made some preliminary plans for our Big Trip Part Two.  We have invited our graduates to come with us, and we hope that most can come.  Christina already has plans for more canoeing on the Boundary Waters and will not be able to come, but maybe the other four will be able to join us.  We expect the cost to be about $100 per girl or adult, and this price is based on 12 of us going and the troop’s paying the Birthplace fee for each girl.   Here’s what we have so far.

Tuesday, May 24           Meet at St. Bede’s at 9:45 a.m. and plan to leave in three or four vehicles by 10:00 a.m.  We can stop for fast food or pack a picnic and plan to arrive in Savannah around 5:00 p.m.  We have rented a house on Tybee Island ($25 per person per night) that is near the beach and that sleeps 14.  We have permission to put a few sleeping bags on the floor if we have more than 14, but people over 21 have first dibs on the beds!  We can make dinner at the house or eat at the Masada Café that was written up in the recent AJC or another Tybee Island spot.

Wednesday, May 25      Breakfast ala camping trip (bagels, fruit, and cereal)
Morning choices:  go to the beach (no swimming unless we have a Red Cross certified lifeguard), visit Tybee Light (the famous lighthouse), or go to the marine center for a 2-hour workshop to earn the Coastal Georgia patch.  Some of these require reservations, so we will have to make this choice ahead of time.  Camping style lunch back at the house with food we’ve brought with us.
Afternoon/evening choices:  River Street Candle Factory ($10 per girl), trolley tour (special Girl Scout tour; group rates for troops), walking ghost tour ($5-10 per), carriage ghost tour ($11-15 per), shopping in the River Street Market ($?), touring the Mercer house, and/or walking around Savannah.  Dinner at the famous Pirates House ($15 per).

Thursday, May 26          Day at the Juliette Low Birthplace ($35 per girl including dinner):
Breakfast as yesterday, ala camping trip
Lunch is a pre-ordered Blimpie lunch picked up ½ a block from the Birthplace and eaten in one of Savannah’s beautiful squares. Check in at 9:30 and get our schedule.  Activities will include a special activity for cadette and senior age girls on 19th century fashion during which you get to try on a corset; tour of the house; time to shop in the gift store; Girl Scout’s Own.  We will have the special Victorian Supper from 4:30-7:30 for which you may want to bring pretty shoes to wear with the Victorian costumes provided by the Birthplace.  We will enjoy a country-style dinner prepared by a local restaurant and served on the Birthplace’s china, silver, glassware, and linens.  Of course we will clean up together.

Friday, May 27              Check out of our house is promptly at 10:00 a.m.  It’s early, but we will need to get on the road anyway to be back in Atlanta by rush hour.  The traffic will determine when we actually get home.

What we need to know from you

We will need a head count for Savannah ASAP.  Reservations and pre-orders will have to be made in the next few weeks, so decide and let us know soon or sooner.  Here’s how the list stands so far.  If you’re on the maybe list, let us know which definite list you should be on.  If you’re a definite yes, please get your check for $100 made out to Senior Troop 4715 to Mrs. Unger as soon as possible.

Definite yes’s: Anne, Audrey, Beth, Elizabeth, Marie, Karen, Pat

Maybes: Brittany, Callie, Chandler, Diana, Evelyn, Jenny, Katie, Maria, Rossie, Stephanie, Tabby

Definite no’s: ______________________
