On my honor, I will try
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and other, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.
What We Did This Year
June 2000 We started off by making swaps. First we needed swaps for our three girls who had been chosen to participate in national Wider Opportunity trips. We had a couple of swap making days, and many hands made light work, which was good considering that we needed 130 for Elizabeth to take to St. Louis, 80 each for Christina and Katie to take to Minnesota, and about a hundred more for our Council friends, Sarah and Joey to take to India for their international Wider Op.
July 2000 In July our three adventurers all took off for their Wider Op trips. Aisha, Katie, Nicole, and Stephanie took advantage of an invitation to tour the new Council Office building, which is much closer to our neighborhood than the old one.
August 2000 In August things started again – school, service unit meetings for the leaders, and regular troop meetings. Anne, Christina, Elizabeth and Evelyn attended the bon voyage party for Sarah and Joey at the new Council Office. We got to hear about everyone’s summer, and we started planning a fund-raiser for our 2004 trip to a Girl Scout Center – maybe Our Chalet or Our Cabana.
September 2000 At our meeting we brainstormed about things we’d like to work on for our Silver Award project, the redesign of the Council Zoo Patch. Even though it’s a Silver Award project, everyone in the troop is working on the patch. In the middle of the month we got to take on the High Ropes Course at Timber Ridge. The zip line is so much fun! Anne, Chandler, Elizabeth and Rossie attended the NightTime Fun Program Aide Weekend. It was so cold, and – oh, no! – more leadership hours.
October We visited the Zoo to get some feedback on our ideas for the Zoo Patch. They liked a lot of our stuff, and stomped on some of our ideas. We went camping at Falcon’s Roost, where we set up two laptops on the porch and wrote the final draft of our patch projects.
November 2000 This month we put on the children’s activities at the St. Bede’s Fall Festival and found out how hard it is to make money this way. What a reality check! Babysitting pays better! Because this conflicted with the Wider Op Interview Weekend, Anne had to be interviewed separately. It was worth it! She was picked to go dog sledding in December, 2001. We got our Zoo Patch project turned in. What a relief!
December 2000 We had our Court of Awards at an Italian-Ethiopian restaurant that set a new record for slow service, but we had a good time.
January 2001 Cookie time again. Why does the sale time always seem too short? Afua, Anne, Aisha, Chandler, Diana, Elizabeth, Jamie, Jenny, and Rossie got some exercise at Pine-less Acres planting pine seedlings to replace those that had to be logged because of pine beetle damage. Hard ground there!
February 2001 Anne, Christina, Evelyn, and Stephanie went to the wilds of Alpharetta to take a karate and self-defense class that fulfills part of the Your Best Defense IPP. We signed up for cookie booths next month, and went up to Misty Mountain for our traditional freezing trail ride and snuggly camping trip in Blue Gill Bay. Jenny and Evelyn actually went to hear Mrs. Callaway’s recital of art songs – brave souls! We helped Mrs. Jennings’ Junior Troop 3559 who ran the Thinking Day Service Unit event this year. We took the passport photos and helped out at booths. Evelyn saved the troop honor by making us a display on Canada (that’s ca-na’-dia).
March 2001 Cookie booths all during the first week, and we sold out at 3:15 on Saturday. We had a kind of relaxed meeting since we were not frantically working on projects. Afua decided to leave us, which made us sad.
April 2001 Anne and Christina got to go to the University of Georgia Veterinary School’s Open House during spring break. Poor Chandler and Rossie couldn’t go because they had to go to Paris. The next day Anne, Christina, Katie, Nicole, and Evelyn took a Hands On Atlanta Workshop at Arabia Mountain. What a fabulous place! What excellent Gold Award Opportunities. There is a new Council-wide environmental committee forming that will be working out there. Some of us may just have to join up. Stephanie and Anne attended the CASE Camporee, where Anne ran here feet off since she was a committee member. She also recruited Mrs. Lott to teach astronomy and Mrs. Callaway to teach cross-stitch. Diana finished her leadership hours, so now we have eight Silver Awardees.
May 2001 All of a sudden the year is over. We’re doing our Court of Awards and helping Senior Troop 5880 put on the Service Unit Bridging. Although we plan to do our official bridging in August by going whitewater rafting, we will cross the bridge so that younger girls can see us moving to Seniors. It’s hard to believe that some of us are coming up to ten years in Girl Scouts this year and next year. Where has the time gone?
