September 1999
When Troops 4715 and 8023 merged ten months ago, we all wondered what would happen. We even had a new member who had not been in either troop. Would we like each other? We started out by going down to Camp Concharty over Labor Day Weekend to stay in the wonderful tree houses and found out we had the whole camp to ourselves. Ranger Bob, who designed the tree houses, kept an eye on us and didn’t even fuss at us when we sneaked into the lake for an unauthorized wading party. We made a mighty start on the Paper Works Interest Project Patch by doing four Skill Builders: paper maché, découpage, paper cutting, and origami. We also spent a lot of time looking at opportunities for Cadettes in Dimensions and planning our year. Later in the month most of us got to attend a Braves game on Girl Scout Day!
October 1999
Some of the girls participated in a just for Cadettes hands on tour of Georgia Public Television in August, and there was another one this month at SciTrek We got to the Wider Op Rally downtown, and began to dream of traveling far and wide. A few intrepid girls began rehearsing at Brenau University for the opera! Every single one of them learned the whole chorus part on her own and the opera director was incredibly proud of their behavior, cooperative spirit, and extremely professional attitudes in the main rehearsals!
November 1999
The Bartered Bride performances happened this month. Singing, dancing, circus, and true love – what could be better. Several of the girls worked hard on Wider Op applications and attended the interview weekends this month. We spent our meeting time planning our winter camping trip and doing some of the Skill Builders for the Performing Arts IPP. Groups of girls did their service projects for the Paper Works IPP by teaching paper crafts to several Brownie troops. We welcomed another new member, Jamie.
December 1999
Everyone was so busy that only three of us made it to the Cadette Challenge at SciTrek and nobody made it to an O-meet this year. Sigh! We had a good day finishing up Paper Works by touring the very interesting Robert C. William American Museum of Paper Making on the Georgia Tech campus (Technology) and then a Wallpaper Atlanta store (Career Exploration).
January 2000
We combined our mid-year Court of Awards with a trip back to Brenau for a wonderful basement to attic tour of Pearce Auditorium given just for us by Sandi Blankenship, the Pearce Auditorium Manager. She took us everywhere! Then we had lunch and awards at St. Ives Coffee House in Gainesville. The theater tour was the Technology part of our Performing Arts IPP, and some of us were planning and rehearsing on our own for the Service Project. The next week was our day to cook dinner for Nicholas House Family Shelter at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, but the staff at Nicolas House has changed the rules and would only let moms in the kitchen. Bummer! Next was cookie time, but our neighborhood sales were hampered by a mega-ice storm! Even so, we managed to help out a Junior Troop by judging their cake-baking contest. Hard work, but we managed!
February 2000
A lot of the girls registered for the Cadette and Senior Experience (C.A.S.E.) Camporee even though we’d never been before. We wondered if we’d like it! We made final plans for our March camping trip and got ready for a busy March. We did our Service Project for the Performing Arts IPP by presenting a show for the residents of Budd Terrace at Wesley Woods.
March 2000
Another great camping trip to Misty Mountain included Crafts by Evelyn, horseback riding, hanging around on the Challenge Tower, and lots of planning time for our Silver Award project and maybe even a senior trip to Europe or Mexico. The consensus is that we really need to come back and do the zip line! We planned for three camping trips next year: Falcon’s Roost in the fall, Misty Mountain in February, and a beginning backpacking trip in the spring. We did our ever beloved cookie booths, and when Marie totaled us up, we make $1200 on cookies. Good work!
April 2000
We found out about the C.A.S.E. Camporee. Much fun! Some of the girls who have been volunteering for the equestrian program at Misty Mountain and Pine Acres even gave up part of their spring break to help out at the Pine Acres Day Camp that week. Three of our girls are actually going on Wider Ops – hurray for Katie, Christina, and Elizabeth. Now we have to help them make all those swaps!
May 2000
All of a sudden it was May and we were finishing up another year. We had decided to work our way through the Zoo Patch since we were thinking about redesigning it as our Silver Award Project, but it took three trips to get even most of us to the Zoo. Can you say "scheduling nightmare"? We met with Debbie Pompie from the Council office to get the facts about how hard it would be to do an "Our Council’s Own" badge or redesign the patch. We seem to be leaning toward the patch redesign.
Silver Award Progress
Not every girl is working toward the Silver Award, and that’s just fine. Girl Scouts is not about recognitions or ranks. Still, sometimes girls change their minds and decide to finish up, so we’ll keep track. If you have a question about your Silver Award Progress or about catching up, get in touch with your trusty advisors.
