More Info Before You Go!
This is where we will post all late-breaking news & weather updates. Last updated: 02/16/17 12:42 PM |
TRAVEL ADVISORY! From Cheryl W: Pocket Road, on the east side (I-75 side) of the mountain, was recently paved most of the way up. As of today [Monday 1/16], the edge white lines and the center yellow lines have not been painted on the new pavement. I know when I have driven up late on Friday night to attend MM, I have relied on those lines to keep me on the road. I have no idea if the state will get the lines down before Friday. Just passing along what I observed. | |

The Unicorn and Dragon Tavern Friday evening the Unicorn and Dragon Tavern opens up at 8:30pm in the lower level of the dining hall. Several brave souls have already claimed spots at the table for icebreaker games, swapping, music, and refreshments, but other weary travelers are welcome to stop by during or after their evening classes; we'll be open a half hour past the other evening activities. |
Bring a costume! Join our village fair! Saturday evening will feature several competitions. Beginning Friday, each of our five units will be asked to create one 3x3 foot felt banner and a cheer or "battle cry" to represent their medieval "clan." Supplies for the banner will be in your unit when you arrive, but you are also welcome to bring items from home. Saturday evening we will gather in the dining hall for a "Battle of the Clans" with each clan displaying their banner, showing off their costumes and giving their cheer. Then we will descend to the lower level for medieval games, where everyone can compete to earn points for their clan. Not into games? We'll have a few other activities too, including a puppet show, crafts, and "printing press" (screen printing - bring your own t-shirt or other item, more info below). At the end of the evening, prizes will be awarded to the clan with the best banner and cheer, the clan with the most points, and to individual costume winners. Don't have a costume? Come, have fun, and help your clan anyway. All are welcome! |

Silk-screening will be offered on Saturday night. You may print multiple items but you will have to get in line again for each item. The cost for screen-printing is $2 per item. Bring any pre-washed light colored item (sweatshirt/tote bag/t-shirt/pillow case) to be printed. A flat 12"x12" printable area is needed for the image. Bring a coat hanger for t-shirts or sweatshirts to dry afterwards. Items with pockets or excess fabric that will bunch up do not print well as the screen needs a completely flat surface. |

Weather Policy |
We would recommend you arrive before dark to avoid the possibility of freezing roads. The "Driving Tips" document above gives alternate flatland routes for driving. In case of inclement weather, please use your own discretion about when to drive up. If you would prefer to wait until Saturday morning, we understand and will be waiting at camp to welcome you. Unfortunately, since we have already pre-paid the camp for your lodging and meals, we cannot give refunds if you decide not to come. (Remember, this is a volunteer-run event, not a Council event.) |

Our philanthropy project for 2017 benefits Out of Darkness, a non-profit organization in Atlanta whose mission is to reach, rescue, and restore victims of commercial sexual exploitation. Through their varied programs, Out of Darkness is leading the way in rescuing and providing a safe haven for women and girls in the commercial sex trade on Atlanta streets. Their safe houses are committed to fulfilling the urgent needs of girls and women who come through their doors by providing medical care, legal services, counseling, job and parenting skills, and more. In rescuing these victims, Out of Darkness has an ongoing urgent need for basic certain items that many of us take for granted but that are essential in the first steps to healing for these women and girls. For this 2017 philanthropy project, we will collect underwear and shoes. Per Out of Darkness, this is their most immediate need. Underwear should be new and in its original package and not opened. Various teen and women's sizes are welcome. Shoes should also be new and unworn. Slip-on shoes are perfect (stores like Five Below are a good place to get these). Various women's shoe sizes are welcome: sizes 5 to 10. As Girl Scouts, we welcome the opportunity to provide much needed items to women and girls who have nothing and by providing a new package of underwear or a new pair of shoes just for her, may be the first step in her healing process. |

We have a songbook for the GS Sing-Along, also
the Graces! Print a copy if you'd like one of your own: |
GRACES: We are asking that each unit at camp take a turn leading the grace at mealtimes. Please plan to meet with your cabin mates and select a grace to lead. Grace will be sung 15 minutes after the start of the meal (allowing for late arrivals). We ask that you be in the dining hall ready to lead the grace at the following times
|
|
Cabin Kapers: You
will be asked to sign up for your choice of unit Kapers when you arrive at camp. Kaper charts will be posted in each unit. In addition, units will rotate responsibility for Dining Hall Kapers.
Dining Hall Kapers are performed during the last 15 minutes of the meal time and consist of wiping the dining hall tables, sweeping the floor, checking the restroom to see if supplies are needed (hand soap, paper towels, toilet tissue); no trash on floor, and change trash liner if needed.
|
|
Goodies for freebie table - Do you have leftover craft supplies? Has your troop outgrown activities? Do you have extra badges/patches to donate? Please bring anything you would like to share with others (please leave junky trash at home, though). Bring some, take some! |

FAQ
Why was the date moved from the 3rd weekend of January to the 4th weekend? Is this going to be a permanent date change?
Mountain Magic Leader Weekend event is always held the weekend after the MLK holiday. It actually isn't the 3rd or 4th weekend per se. It varies based on when the MLK holiday falls. (MLK is always the 3rd Monday, but depending what day the month starts, it makes our weekend sometimes the 3rd weekend and sometimes the 4th.)
Can I switch beds or sleep in the common area if I see an empty bed/couch?
No, every bed is assigned for the weekend. There are no vacant bottom bunks. Additionally, for safety reasons, we must know in which bed every camper is sleeping. We ask that night owls and early birds use the common areas so that they don't disturb other campers, and sleeping in the common area is not permitted. If you need to change beds, please see Marie Wright in the dining hall.
My cabin mate is noisy/snores - can you help?
We have a limited number of ear plugs available for light sleepers. See Lianne in the dining hall.
My cabin mate shines her flashlight all night and wakes me up - can you help?
We have a limited number of eye shades available for light sleepers. See Lianne in the dining hall.
My room is too hot/cold - can you help?
The cabin thermostats have been preset and we ask that you not change the thermostat. You may want to bring an extra sheet and blanket so you can sleep cooler or warmer if needed.
Can I eat in the sleeping area?
No, all food must be kept in the kitchen areas or dining hall and must be consumed in the same areas. (Of course, don't eat food that isn't yours unless it's on the snack table!) Food is not permitted in the sleeping areas.
What is "Camper Etiquette"?
Good camper etiquette basically means that you be a sister to every scout and treat fellow campers with respect. After lights out, please whisper, use flashlights sparingly, and don't disturb others in your cabin if you stay up later than others or get up earlier than others. We ask that late owls and early birds stay quietly in the common areas or meet in the dining hall for louder fun with other insomniacs. :-) In other words, treat others as you would like to be treated.
I forgot my cell phone charger - how can I keep the battery up while I'm at camp? (I sure would like to use my phone's alarm clock and apps!)
Put your smart phone on "Airplane Mode" while at camp. It won't keep trying to search for a signal and won't run down so fast.
