Road Conditions Check back for frequent updates. |
Travel update 1/19/18, 10 AM: Lianne G. says "Happy to report
that the route over the mountain (exit 312 or 315) is completely clear!
No issues or icy spots even pulling a trailer!" Forecast 1/19/18: The high will be 50° on Friday and 55° on Saturday! Check out the weather link below. Travel update 1/18/18, 5 PM: Carol T. reports that exit 306 is clear all the way to camp. Travel update 1/18/18, 11 AM: Good morning! Same road conditions this morning. Staff travelled south to Rome, and over the mountain back to the freeway and south. Most places dry and open, but shaded places can have snow/ice and care would need to be taken to travel. Thanks! ~ Tori Travel update 1/17/18, 5 PM: Hello! As of this afternoon, Jason is reporting that the roads are in quite good shape. There are shaded spots with some snow and ice in which one would need to be careful, but the roads are much more clear than they are not-clear. We've had camp folks drive north, drive south, and drive over the mtn. I'll get you another update mid-morning ~ Tori Travel update 1/17/18, 11 AM: Camp Director Tori says that they got only a light dusting of snow yesterday (you can see the grass through the snow), and the roads are already quite passable, with caution. Camp staff have already gone over/back across the mountain in a non-four wheel drive vehicles with no issues this morning, and come to camp via another route from Rome with no issues. Weather is expected to warm up by Friday. |

Weather Policy |
We would recommend you arrive before dark to avoid the possibility of freezing roads. The "Driving Tips" document above gives alternate flatland routes for driving. In case of inclement weather, please use your own discretion about when to drive up. If you would prefer to wait until Saturday morning, we understand and will be waiting at camp to welcome you. Unfortunately, since we have already pre-paid the camp for your lodging and meals, we cannot give refunds if you decide not to come. (Remember, this is a volunteer-run event, not a Council event.) |

Service Project 2018: Our philanthropy project for 2018 benefits Stand Up For Kids Atlanta. They are a nationally recognized non-profit charity that works with homeless youth in Atlanta. They have been supporting these youth with their Street Outreach and School Mentoring Programs since 2003. Please visit their website www.standupforkids.org/atlanta for more information about their programs, services, and volunteer opportunities. For our 2018 philanthropy project we will be collecting hoodies, socks, and travel size first aid kits for Stand Up For Kids Street Outreach program. Hoodies should be new or in gently used condition. Socks should be new and in original unopened packages. Hoodies sizes range from youth L- Unisex XL, and sock sizes are Children 4 up to Adult 13. Travel size first aid kits need to be small and portable. Dollar stores, Big Lots, Target and Wal-Mart usually have these in stock. Please help us support Stand Up For Kids as they strive to keep the homeless youth of Atlanta safe and warm. |

Please note that we will have registered male Girl Scouts on camp with us this year. We will strictly follow the guidelines spelled out for "Males Traveling with Girl Scouts" as specified in the 2016-2017 Volunteer Essentials, page. 126, including having separate room for male volunteers to sleep in and coordinated bathroom facilities usage. See https://www.girlscoutsatl.org/content/dam/girlscouts-girlscoutsatl/documents/Volunteer-Essentials.pdf

Silk-screening will be offered as a drop-in activity on Saturday night. You may print multiple items but you will have to get in line again for each item. The cost for screen-printing is $1 per item this year. Bring any pre-washed light colored item (sweatshirt/tote bag/t-shirt/pillow case) to be printed. A flat 12"x12" printable area is needed for the image. Bring a coat hanger for t-shirts or sweatshirts to dry afterwards. Items with pockets or excess fabric that will bunch up do not print well as the screen needs a completely flat surface. |
Saturday evening fun - We're having an Un-Birthday Party! There will be cake & ice cream, Victorian crafts, fun, games and prizes for costumes, cabin project and challenging games. |

We have a songbook for the GS Sing-Along, also
the Graces! Print a copy if you'd like one of your own: |
GRACES: We are asking that each unit at camp take a turn leading the grace at mealtimes. Please plan to meet with your cabin mates and select a grace to lead. Grace will be sung 15 minutes after the start of the meal (allowing for late arrivals). We ask that you be in the dining hall ready to lead the grace at the following times Updated for 2018:
|
|
Cabin Kapers: You
will be asked to sign up for your choice of unit Kapers when you arrive at camp. Kaper charts will be posted in each unit. In addition, units will rotate responsibility for Dining Hall Kapers.
Dining Hall Kapers are performed during the last 15 minutes of the meal time and consist of wiping the dining hall tables, sweeping the floor, checking the restroom to see if supplies are needed (hand soap, paper towels, toilet tissue); no trash on floor, and change trash liner if needed. Updated for 2018:

FAQ
Why was the date moved from the 3rd weekend of January to the 4th weekend? Is this going to be a permanent date change?
Mountain Magic Leader Weekend event is always held the weekend after the MLK holiday. It actually isn't the 3rd or 4th weekend per se. It varies based on when the MLK holiday falls. (MLK is always the 3rd Monday, but depending what day the month starts, it makes our weekend sometimes the 3rd weekend and sometimes the 4th.)
Can I switch beds or sleep in the common area if I see an empty bed/couch?
No, every bed is assigned for the weekend. There are no vacant bottom bunks. Additionally, for safety reasons, we must know in which bed every camper is sleeping. We ask that night owls and early birds use the common areas so that they don't disturb other campers, and sleeping in the common area is not permitted. If you need to change beds, please see Marie Wright in the dining hall.
My cabin mate is noisy/snores - can you help?
We have a limited number of ear plugs available for light sleepers. See Lianne in the dining hall.
My cabin mate shines her flashlight all night and wakes me up - can you help?
We have a limited number of eye shades available for light sleepers. See Lianne in the dining hall.
My room is too hot/cold - can you help?
The cabin thermostats have been preset and we ask that you not change the thermostat. You may want to bring an extra sheet and blanket so you can sleep cooler or warmer if needed.
Can I eat in the sleeping area?
No, all food must be kept in the kitchen areas or dining hall and must be consumed in the same areas. (Of course, don't eat food that isn't yours unless it's on the snack table!) Food is not permitted in the sleeping areas.
What is "Camper Etiquette"?
Good camper etiquette basically means that you be a sister to every scout and treat fellow campers with respect. After lights out, please whisper, use flashlights sparingly, and don't disturb others in your cabin if you stay up later than others or get up earlier than others. We ask that late owls and early birds stay quietly in the common areas or meet in the dining hall for louder fun with other insomniacs. :-) In other words, treat others as you would like to be treated.
I forgot my cell phone charger - how can I keep the battery up while I'm at camp? (I sure would like to use my phone's alarm clock and apps!)
Put your smart phone on "Airplane Mode" while at camp. It won't keep trying to search for a signal and won't run down so fast.
